10 Ways to Use All Purpose Healing Salve & Recipe

If I had to choose only one skin care product out of the hundreds of products I've tried over the years, this All Purpose Healing Salve would be it!

I've shared this recipe on a prior blog post, DIY Skin Care for Gardeners.  But since then, more and more people have used it and shared HOW they used it!  I'm very grateful that this salve has improved so many lives of both people and animals (excellent for wound care).  Read on and discover just how versatile this salve can be!

All Purpose Healing Salve Recipe:

1  Cup Cold Pressed, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
1  Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4  T. Beeswax Pastilles
1/2 t. vitamin e oil (optional)

To each jar add:

10  drops doTERRA Lavender
  8  drops doTERRA Lemon
  6  drops doTERRA Melaleuca
1/2  teaspoon Vitamin e oil (optional)

Fills {4} - 4 oz glass mason jars or small glass jars of choice.

Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer as well as antibacterial.  Olive oil has lots of anti-oxidants, including Hydroxytyrosol as well as anti-inflammatory properties.
Lavender soothes and heals, Lemon cleanses and disinfects while Melaleuca is antibacterial and antifungal!

Melt the coconut, olive oil and beeswax in a warm bath, stirring with a knife every few minutes until melted.

Add the essential oils.

Stir, then pour into glass jars of your choice and let cool.

Put a paper towel over the jars while cooling and wait to cover with lids until completely cooled down.  Shelf life is one year.

Suggestions from experience:  Use small jars so you can keep several around the house and have travel sizes handy.

Here's a list of ways that All Purpose Healing Balm has been used...with great success I might add :)

1.  Crazy good hand moisturizer!

2.  Amazing on dry, cracked heels and crusty elbows.

3.  All round moisturizer for dry climes.  I use it as a body          moisturizer and even on my face, sparingly!

4.  Soothes and heals chapped lips or any chappy place.

5.  Soothes welts, burns and sunburn!

6.  Great for diaper rash.

7.  Keep your animals in mind!  My son has healed his bulldogs sunburned noses with this.  Great antiseptic wound care for animals (except cats).

8.  Antiseptic properties make it great for cuts and scrapes!

9.  Wonderful for elderly folks and their thin, fragile skin.

10. Great for scaly scalp!

Notes:  It's super easy to double the recipe if you're making gifts!  Great gift to give, by the way.  Purchase some lip balm pots or tins and fill with salve to keep in your purse or backpack.

Make sure to share, everyone can benefit from this natural healing salve and it's just a nice thing to do!

  1. LOVE LOVE LOVE This ~ my son's allergies manifest through is skin (no watery eyes or nose) so he is constantly dealing with welts and itching all over his body. We have used a similar recipe for him for many many years and it's the only thing that works. I highly recommend using this recipe with the EO because it really makes a difference. Whenever my son is over exposed and the welts are breaking out all over his legs ~ we actually smear this suave on and then wrap his legs in ace bandages before he goes to bed. Sometimes we even have to do it for his arms and chest. He quits itching and goes to sleep. We have tried many prescription ointments over the years to satisfy the doctors but either they don't work or my son is allergic to them. So we have made a believer out of his current doctor.

I use it on myself as well for dry hands and feet. I love the smell and it soothes me when I'm stressed. Thanks for the post! SandyKay

  2. I need to make this! Do you know how much 2 T. of the beeswax pastilles weighs?

    1. I believe it's approx. 1/2 an ounce!

  3. I have been making something similar for years. Also makes a great leather conditioner and furniture wax/polish and cure for squeaky door hinges and sticky sliding glass doors.

  4. OK I'm new at this, what are and where do I find "Beeswax Pastilles"

    ReplyDelete

    1. Pastilles are small bits of beeswax...they melt faster and a little easier to measure out. I buy mine from Amazon :)

  5. Wow thanks for sharing, I'm excited about trying this! Do you buy your jars online too?

  7. I also am allergic to Lavender? Any suggestions?

    1. Possibly peppermint, slightly different properties though.

    2. Rose Geranium is a good one as well. Helichrysum is a wonderful healing oil.

    1. Do you just search for lip balm jars? What are they called on Amazon? Thanks so much!

    2. Yep...that's pretty much what you do! There's quite a few options available on Amazon.

    3. I'm making the salve today. I'm out of lemon eo, would it be ok to use grapefruit or lemongrass or does the lemon have something essential to do with the antiseptic queality effectiveness? Also, my health store had something called beeswax beads (looks like powder to me). How much of the powder do you think I should use since it's more concentrated than the pastilles?

      Delete
    4. You can substitute the lemon with whatever you like, grapefruit would be good. I'm sorry but Ive never used a beeswax powder so I wouldnt know the ratio.

      Delete
    5. Ok, I made it today (picked up the Lemon EO - needed it anyway). I think the beeswax powder must be super concentrated because I only ended up with a pint about 2/3 full. I decided to add 4 Vitamin E gelcaps (holes poked in both ends). End result was 1/2 pint and 1/4 of another 1/2 pint so I made another batch to fill the other 1/2 pint and top off the other. I am going to have to play around with the measurement on the beeswax powder - but, I'll get there!

~What is the consistency of the salve? Soft but looks hard? Hard and waxy like Carmex or lip balm?

~If the consistency doesn't seem to be thick enough - would it be ok to reheat and adjust my beeswax and pour back into 1/2 pints?

~Do you squeeze the Vitamin E oil from the gelcaps or do you put the gelcaps in whole?

~Do you split the number of drops between each 1/2 pint or do you put 20/10/10 in each jar?

      Thanks so much!

I love this! It smells great (my dad loved it!). I know already that I'll be making this often. I do have a few questions for clarification (hope you don't mind).

      Delete
    6. Good morning!
Consistency for the salve is best when soft but looks hard. If you want to make a batch of lip balm, just add a little more beeswax for a more solid consistency. I don't recommend reheating and, I squeeze the oil out of gelcaps without adding the gelcap. I add the oil recipe in each jar.
Thanks for the questions! So happy you love it too :)

    7. Wow, you're an early riser way out West! Thanks for your patience and help. I have 1 final question to clarify (I don't understand) - You put 20/10/10 of the oil in each jar or 10/5/5 - make sense? Sorry to be such a pain & glad you're home from your quick trip to the beautiful CA beaches!

      Delete
    8. Ha! Yes I am...I love coffee :) Sorry, I misunderstood...10/5/5 in each jar. Duh, I'm still a little road weary apparently :) Are you joining in on the webinar tonight? You should if you can...lots to learn from the comfort of your home :) Details on how to log in on CW Facebook page! Take care!

  9. I am wondering can you extra virgin olive oil? Should I also use a specific brand of olive oil? Do I need to use doterra?
    Sorry for all the questions

    1. Maria, EVOO is great! I suggest doTERRA because I know the oils are pure without any additives. This balm would not be near as effective without PURE essential oils.

  10. Do you measure the coconut as a solid in a 1/2 cup measuring cup or liquid in a graduated glass measuring cup?

  12. I going to make this up for my Christmas gift baskets this year. Thanks for sharing all these great uses for essential oils, I'm learning so much. Love your blog!

  13. I too, am out of lemon EO. I was thinking of using geranium instead. Am in the process of making it right now. Next batch if I used say, the mint oils, peppermint, spearmint and wintergreen it would be like a sore muscle salve, yes?

  14. I was really interested in this but.....
    I don't like lavender, and can't stand Melaleuca/tea tree.
Anyone with any suggestions for subs for these. (Not real crazy about lemon, but can live with that.)

  15. Ours turned out way too runny - I heated it back up and added a little bit more beeswax, it's cooling now. I came here to check what the consistency should be and saw the comment above where it says not to reheat - will it be ok? Is there a reason to not reheat?

    ReplyDelete
  16. It should be fine...hopefully you didn't melt it back down at high temps. That's my only concern with reheating.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I melted it the same way as the instructions above - using a water bath on the stove on low stirring as it melted and then I removed it from the water as soon as everything was well mixed.

  18. I just use mostly coconut oil and a small amount of olive oil, along with my essential oils. Coconut oil is antibacterial, and anti-fungal, plus it is absorbed easily and quickly by the skin. I'm an esthetician and it is the primary product I use on my skin. My salve is probably softer, but works just fine and has a lovely creaminess. I also squeeze a capsule of Vitamin E into the salve as an extra preservative, although coconut oil doesn't become rancid for a long time. I've been making my salve for many years. I started making it this way because I had a few clients who had allergies to bees and I wasn't sure if it would be an issue.

    1. Mrs. K, do you any essential oils, or just the oils (& vita E)? If you use any essential oils, which do YOU use?
I too use coconut oil a LOT! It is a major ingredient in a face "cream" that I make.
I don't use Lavender or Melaleuca (tree tree). Don't like them, and tho I have Lemon Eucalyptus, I don't have any lemon oil. I do have orange.
Would those work, and maybe peppermint? (Anybody.....?)

  19. Rebecca, I saw your article in the newsletter about the salve with LLP and Frankincense. Is it basically this recipe, but you use Peppermint in place of the melaleuca and add some frankincense?

    1. Patti...I add 6 drops of Frankincense to each 4 oz jar along with LLP.

    2. Thanks...anxiously awaiting my LRP order so I can make this...no Frankincense left in the bottle....I'm missing it, too!

  21. My father has a surgical wound that is healing and is taking a long time, would this be safe to use?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, this would safe to use. All of the ingredients have antibacterial properties except the olive oil. If you have Frankincense, add 6 drops to a 4oz jar to aid with tissue regeneration!

  22. Would it be best to leave out the beeswax and just use the oils? It's a large abdominal wound and wondering if the wax would make it hard to clean off? I've never made anything with oils.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Pamela, the Healing Salve would be best used after the wound has closed and stopped oozing. I would use essential oils diluted in a little fractionated coconut oil on the new wound. Helichrysum is excellent for wound care and tissue restoration. Melaleuca to be free of infection. Frankincense for regeneration. Have you used essential oils...and Im speaking of doTERRA essential oils.

    2. I've never used essential oils....I'm completely new to this, just researching trying to find something to help heal this wound.

    1. Erin, I use the mason jar to save having to clean one of my pans...it's your choice :))

  24. I'v made a renewed batch. YAY. I didn't like the consistency of the first batch so I did reheat this morning, added more beeswax, allowed to cool a bit, added a few more drops of the essential oils I chose to use, and...I even poured some into a chap-stick tube which I just purchased from a local store that I didn't know existed until yesterday! I used Grapefruit, Rosemary, Cinnamon Bark & Peppermint as my oils; I'm a bit sensitive to Lavender so I don't always use it, nor Tea Tree for the same reasons so I'm selective how/why I use those. This "renewed" batch came out absolutely perfect! Thank you!

  30. Thanks for this, a half batch perfectly filled my 4oz tins I use at home and my 1oz ones I use for one the go [1 each]. I was wondering if you had a recipe for a home made vapor rub?

  31. I was so agitated tonight with extremely itchy legs. I have been bothered by them since the end of December. I am not sure what is causing them to have such an extreme itch. So, I mixed 10 drops of lavendar, 5 drops of lemon, 5 drops of melaleuca and 5 drops of frankincense to 30 ml of fractionated coconut oil. It is oily but my skin soaked it right up and I had immediate relief! So I will continue to use it the next couple of days and see if this relieves it altogether. I am excited to try making it into the salve recipe listed above!
